College teams

Most Colleges in Nelson/Tasman have sailing teams – a squad of 12-14 sailors enables two teams. Training is after school during terms 4 and 1 of the school year (with schools allocated different afternoons). Inter-school racing takes place each Sunday in the Nelson harbour (terms 4 & 1).

Safe environment

NBTS offers a safe and healthy club environment for students. NBTS has detailed health and safety standard operating procedures, which are updated on a regular basis, and as required by law.

Coaching

To ensure the students are correctly instructed, safely and with respect for the boats, NBTS contracts a qualified coach for the summer season (through Nelson Yacht Club). This season our coach is Patrick Harris. Patrick is an experienced sailor and coach.

Cost

An indication of the costs to expect when joining Nelson Bays Team Sailing (based on the 2024-25 sailing season are:

  • Nelson Yacht Club youth membership $112. This covers the whole sailing season spanning 2 terms. To participate in Team Sailing you are required to be a member of the Nelson Yacht Club.

  • Term 4 squad registration fees - $250. This is charged through the Nelson Yacht Club and payment is at the start of the season. This covers costs associated with coaching, use of the yachts, yacht club facilities and maintenance of equipment.

  • Term 1 fees are split into 2 portions, depending on coaching requirements.

Squad registration up to the Regional regatta ( all sailors participate in the regional regatta) - $320.

Squad registration for pre National and National Regatta (selected sailors will attend the National Regatta) - $273.

Including the Nationals training squad which is dependent on selection, this is approximately $843 for 2 terms of sailing. ($955 including the membership to the Nelson Yacht Club).

Other Costs:

  • Holiday programs are offered through the Nelson Yacht Club and can be for 3-5 days, and operate similarly to other holiday programs in terms of hours and hourly cost. e.g. Spring holiday beginner/Development program for 3 days was $180, ($60 per day).

  • Required equipment - Buoyancy Vest, these are available at approximately $100, nzsailing.com and Burnsco Marine carry a good range.

  • Regattas - costs associated with regattas will vary between schools as they all have different funding criteria, and will be towards accommodation, food, travel etc. Although this is a significant additional cost, it is what the teams work hard towards and look forward to, as its all about racing!
